Paul's Oyster Bar & Microbrewery

Paul’s Oyster Bar has been a fixture in Rome for more than 50 years, starting out as Obie’s Oyster Bar in a remodeled gas station on the Alabama Highway close to the huge Temple-Inland Container.

Several changes of ownership later, the restaurant is now growing even more popular as Rome’s only microbrewery.

Paul’s has been at its present location, 2901 Alabama Highway, since 1983 and has been owned and operated by Chuck and Joan Hufstetler since 1994.

Their son Caleb Hufstetler joined the management team in 2006. Daughter Schell Hufstetler started to work at the restaurant at a young age and even the Hufstetler’s youngest daughter Rebeckah can be seen helping out. It’s truly a family restaurant!

As the name implies, Paul’s Oyster Bar is Rome’s home for a variety of fresh seafood, whether it’s Maine scallops, Louisiana oysters, Gulf Coast shrimp or farm-fresh catfish, tilapia and salmon. Alaskan snow crab legs, lobster, grouper and mahi-mahi are also available regularly.

Homemade tarter and cocktail sauces are a tasty topping for the seafood specials.

Paul’s is also tops for hand-cut steaks, including rib eyes and filet mignon, as well as large hamburger steaks. Caleb’s Chicken is also a favorite.

A complete variety of fresh vegetables and homemade desserts round out the dinner menu.

The microbrewery is the latest addition, opening early in 2011 with six different types of fresh brewed beer ranging from light ale to a heavier dark brew. New wheat and stout beers are also available.

“We feel the availability of Cave Spring Water has made a big difference in the brewing process as water is an important component of the process,” Joan Hufstetler said.

In addition to its traditional dining room, the restaurant now features a screened porch deck where Chuck Hufstetler said that he’s hoping to bring in some light entertainment, maybe an acoustic guitarist, on special occasions.

Paul’s Oyster Bar is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 4 p.m. until 10 on Saturday.
