Piggly Wiggly of Lindale

Millican said that he bought into the Piggly Wiggly franchise in 2008. “The name Piggly Wiggly is a little more well known by people moving into the area than a Millican’s,” Millican said. “This is basically all I’ve ever done.”

Spence is a third-generation family grocer. His grandfather started the business in 1923 and Millican said he’s got a receipt dating all the way to 1927. The current location, built by his father and brother, is the fourth location for the family-owned business. The current owner tried other opportunities through the years, but came back to the grocery for good in June 1985.

The store has 38 employees spread out over the store which not only features a bakery and deli section, but has always featured home-cooked meals right there in the store.

“A lot of people eat lunch with us,” said Millican. The aroma of fried chicken wafts over the entrance to the store on almost any given afternoon. Add some mashed potatoes; pinto beans and you’re a Southerner ready for your afternoon nap.

While the store has literally hundreds of items that are priced at a dollar or less, the store has always been known for its fresh cut meats.

“I’m just an old meat guy,” Millican said. Just like its operator, generations of Lindale citizens have shopped with Millican. “I can see many of their faces,” Millican said.

The Lindale Piggly Wiggly is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
